Overview

how treat termites pole barns : Overview
The roof of a pole barn is held up by poles and beams. The pole barn lacks exterior walls and has a roof that extends out further than the poles. Pole barns are rectangular and tend to be one of the least costly types of barns. But one major problem with pole barns is that they can attract termites and will need to be treated to prevent the insects from coming around and eating up the wood.

Step 1

Clean out the barn. Remove everything from the pole barn, including animals, equipment and hay.

Step 2

Buy a product that won't harm animals but can be used to treat your barn to keep termites away.

Step 3

Spray the pole barn thoroughly with a mixture that is half Bora-Care and half water. Pour some of the mixture into the container connected to your sprayer and spray the entire barn, including its roof. Be sure to reach every inch of wood.

Step 4

Use a different method of treating termites. The Sentricon System allows you to place housing stations into the ground where animals will not be affected but termites will die within weeks. Each station is covered with a lid that sits flush with the ground but can be pulled out when needed.

Step 5

Place each station 10 feet apart throughout the pole barn. The system comes with monitoring devices that will let you know how successful the bait is.

Step 6

Put everything back in the barn. If you used the spray method, wait until the wood stops dripping before replacing everything. Treat every six months. With the Sentricon System you can put everything back immediately after you place all the stations into the ground. Check the stations weekly without removing everything from the pole barn.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : If you're using Bora-Care, be sure to spray the beams and posts as well. Make sure everything is saturated with the mixture.
