Overview

building straight fence : Overview
Building a straight fence is not only aesthetically pleasing, but will save you money in the long run by requiring less building material. By following a few basic procedures and using a few very inexpensive tools, you will be able to run a straight and level fence in no time at all.

Step 1

Purchase the masonry string line and the line level at any big box store or hardware store. The items combined cost less than $10. They can be stored in an old coffee can to keep moisture from the string and the level from being broken. Once you learn the method of straight string line leveling, you may be using this for all types of projects.

Step 2

Tie a loop on the end of the masonry string. This loop will be permanent for the remainder of any line level project.

Step 3

Pass the string through the tied loop and pull it to form a larger cinch ring in the line.

Step 4

Place the cinch loop over one of the corner posts for the fence. You should have two, end corner posts already set in the ground for the fencing project.

Step 5

Use the tape measure and pencil to identify the height of the fence that you are wanting to build.

Step 6

Place the loop of string around this mark and cinch the line tight.

Step 7

Stretch the string line to the other post at the end of the fencing run.

Step 8

Wrap the string line taut, around the end post and place the line level in the center of the hanging string. You will have to pull the string very tight for the line level to be accurate. The tensile strength of the masonry string is extremely strong and very difficult to break.

Step 9

Read the line level. The bubble should be between the two center lines on the clear plastic tube that is mounted in the middle of the line level.

Step 10

Adjust the string line on the end post, where the string is wrapped around, until the bubble indicates a "level" string line.

Step 11

Mark the line on the post with the pencil and remove the line level from the masonry string line.

Step 12

Stretch the string taunt again between the two posts. The line is now ready and can be used for installing the other posts in a straight, "level" line between the outer end posts.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Installing a fence that goes up or down on a hill side may have to be done in sections to keep the fence in a level stair step type of configuration. In this case the same method applies but only in a shorter distance. This same method can be used for laying out a garden or setting a line of trees in an orchard.
