Overview
A shed frame is the basis for any size or style shed you want to build. Building a shed frame can be done in an afternoon with help once the corner posts are cemented in. After you have your frame done, you can decide on the type of roof, floor and walls you want. You can decide if you want it insulated or not. You can even decide whether or not to have electricity in your shed.
Step 1
Measure out the area where you plan to build the shed, and level the ground. You can level the ground by either adding or taking away dirt, whichever is easier depending on the amount of leveling you need to do. Make sure the ground is level before you begin, especially if you plan to put a floor in your shed.
Step 2
Dig a hole in each of the four corners of the shed. You can use a post hole digger to save time on this part, and each hole should be 36 inches deep. Make sure each post is in a straight line with the other posts, and each corner creates a 90-degree angle. If your corner posts are not lined up properly, your shed will be crooked.
Step 3
Place a 4-by-4 post in each of the four corner holes, and then fill the hole with cement to hold the post in place. Check the bag of cement to determine the amount of drying time needed before you can continue.
Step 4
Nail 2-by-4 boards up every 16 inches. The boards will go horizontally between the corner posts. Start at the ground and work your way up.
Step 5
Nail the top 2-by-4s to the top of the 4-by-4 corner posts. This is important because you'll need something to attach the roof to.
Step 6
Choose the type of roof you want to put on the shed. You can either buy pre-made roof trusses and attach them to the top of the shed, or you can nail 2-by-4 boards across the top of the shed and install a metal shed roof. Roof trusses are much harder to handle than a metal shed roof.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Decide what kind of floor you want before you begin the project. Cement floors for example, should be done before you build the shed frame, while wood floors can be added later.
- WARNING : Always have a person there to help when using power tools and climbing ladders.
