Last week my jumper Vanessa started refusing jumps in a simple gymnastic exercise. Knowing her very well and that she never refuses; I knew that something was wrong. For the past month I’ve had her on regular small doses of ulcer guard and she recently began a daily stomach supplement but we hadn’t had any definite diagnosis done. We had started the medication because she had become very upset in her stall and touchy when being groomed.
The vet came out on Friday and scoped Vanessa’s stomach in order to get a picture and be able to know for sure what was wrong with her. As it turned out, she does have two moderately severe ulcers and will be on a more aggressive regiment of ulcer guard as well as a number of other things.
Ulcers are more common in horses then most people realize and if you notice a change in your horse’s behavior or if you compete regularly it is worth looking into possible treatments.
