Over the past winter, one of Sycamore’s most beloved school horses named Ivy broke her leg during a completely normal riding lesson. The veterinarians said that with winter shoes on even in great footing, which we have, as the horse goes around a corner the winter shoe can catch in such a way that it applies pressure and breaks the leg.

Luckily, the leg had broken in a place that with intense surgery and long term care we were told Ivy had a 60% chance of being a happy pasture horse, but she would never be ridden again.

After multiple surgeries and months of professional care at an equine hospital, Ivy came home this week. She’ll be on stall rest most likely another month and still has a huge cast on the leg but she is home and we are all looking forward to watching her graze happily in our large grass field for many years to come.

Enjoy retirement!

Site Manager - Mara Hi, I'm Mara. I hold several equine business related degrees and have earned numerous national awards for riding. I've been seriously involved with horses my entire life and have ridden with many locally and nationally known horse professionals. I've also worked as a working student for hunter/jumper trainers Tammy Provost-Vitello and Wendy Newby, primarily as a rider and instructor. I've worked extensively with event, jumper and dressage trainer Jerry Schurink.

My love for horses is genuine and my desire to share that passion with others is the chief reason I'm working on this site. Be sure to check out my blog for more about my experiences with horses as well as my videos here on the site.
