Balance
As a rider, good balance and evenness on the horse are important for various reasons. Our ability to properly influence the horse, keep our position and help to develop the horse evenly comes from having good balance and the ability to sit as equally as possible.

One of the exercises I like to use for myself and my students is as simple as dropping your stirrups. By dropping your stirrups at any gait you are able to focus on how evenly your weight is distributed on your seat bones. This exercise is perhaps most useful at the sitting trot. Very often riders tense up and brace on their stirrups in order to sit the trot and this exercise forces you to use your body to absorb the shock of the trot and sit equally around your horse.

Site Manager - Mara Hi, I'm Mara. I hold several equine business related degrees and have earned numerous national awards for riding. I've been seriously involved with horses my entire life and have ridden with many locally and nationally known horse professionals. I've also worked as a working student for hunter/jumper trainers Tammy Provost-Vitello and Wendy Newby, primarily as a rider and instructor. I've worked extensively with event, jumper and dressage trainer Jerry Schurink.

My love for horses is genuine and my desire to share that passion with others is the chief reason I'm working on this site. Be sure to check out my blog for more about my experiences with horses as well as my videos here on the site.
